Characterization of Reproductive Biology in Captive African Rhinoceros

Our role:
Fossil Rim has pioneered studies of reproductive function in African rhinoceros and is continuing to apply this knowledge to enhance conservation efforts for this endangered taxa internationally.

Project summary:
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center has continued to expand on its rhinoceros research objectives with ongoing support from the International Rhino Foundation. The IRF funding via the addendum to Grant R-96-5 allowed further studies designed to document the normal reproductive function of the white and black rhinoceros. In particular, the recent documentation of the reproductive cycle in our F1 female may provide important information about this group of rhinos that face significant challenges in terms of reproductive success. Further confirmation of normal gestational parameters in our black rhino has allowed accumulation of basic information about the reproductive biology of the species for applied management in both captive and wild populations of black rhinoceros.

quick facts

The rhinos allow the procedures in exchange for their favorite treats of apples or sweet potatoes-without sedation.

The reproductive biology of the two species of African rhinoceros is very similar to the domestic horse. In fact, the follicular dynamics of the black rhino are nearly identical to that of large draft horse breeds such as the Clydesdale!
