made for Fossil Rim to breed specific addax for the Species
Survival Plan (SSP) for 2007
We
finished capturing addax for the SSP (Species Survival Plan)
herd.. We had to capture several animals out of the main pasture
and Retirement pasture to facilitate this. We now have a total
of 16 addax in the Klein Grass pasture next to the Grevy's Zebra
Pasture.
A
young male will come out of that group and 2 females will come
out that were born last year. This
will leave that herd at a breeding bull and 12 cows that
we hope will all conceive. Historically, after a breeding hiatus some of the
cows will not conceive. Most likely we won't have 12 calves, but will try to
keep the herd unchanged for the 2008 breeding season.
We
have also introduced an addax bull into the main pasture and
so will have calves out
there in about 9 months too. The two females that will come
out of that pasture are destined for San Diego Wild Animal Park
where they will
be in
quarantine until they fly out for Tunisia for reintroduction. We are also
sending 2 female Scimitar Horned Oryx for this same reintroduction.
There are 5 national
parks in Tunisia and the zoos have been working for several months to bring
some of our animals back to the wild. They shipped some out several years
ago to one
of the parks and this shipment is slated for one of the other parks to begin
their herds. This is good stuff for Fossil Rim. It is why we breed these
animals. |
