Rhino Ballet
By Dave Thompson

Well, maybe that is a bit much, but you would be surprised to learn just how agile these great beasts can be. They can run at speeds up to 35 miles per hour, I sure wouldn't want to try to outrun one. Next time you see them lying down, check out their feet. You will probably notice both feet on one side of the body are propped with the pads on the ground; this lets them get up amazingly quickly if they are startled.

Reports have it that they are also able to plant their feet into the ground when running and do practically a 180 turn. Not many of us would expect something weighing as much as a rhino being able to perform feats such as these. After spending a day or two in the barn area for protection from the cold, you can often observe their antics running across their 10 acre enclosure in apparent delight. What a different look at an animal thought to be slow and cumbersome.
