It was
a fantastic experience, one that will live in our memories for many years,
and we’ve already recommended it to other family members.
When
deciding to spend the day at Fossil Rim, we knew that driving through on
our own for our first visit might produce a lot of “Look,
Mom, there’s another antelope-thing” - not what I had
in mind for our special day! Instead, we sat back in the shaded,
open-air tour vehicle and relaxed while our tour guide shared interesting
information about the various species and Texas landscape we were
seeing. We even went off the regular driving route to the “Staff
Only” roads for even more access to some of the animals.
Hand-feeding several giraffes was most certainly the highlight
of the tour for
my daughter – and they’re so much bigger right up close!
Before
we left home, I spent some time on the Fossil Rim website, and
printed my own page full of small photos of each species. Each
photo had the name of the animal and a blank line next to it.
My daughter used this sheet to keep tally marks of how many of
each
animal she saw while on our tour. She was delighted that she
saw every animal on her sheet, except for the few that were off
exhibit.
We’re keeping the page in her scrapbook as a fond memory
of the day.
Thank
you for making our rare "family time” extra
special! We plan to come back to take our own driving
tours in the future, now
that we know the difference between a Blackbuck and a Blesbok,
and are on a first-name basis with the giraffes!
