New Giraffe Bull Finds Home at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
continued from main newsletter

He will remain separated from the rest of the herd for a 30-day period of quarantine and then be integrated with the cows and calves. According to the papers that came with him, he sired 11 calves in 6 years at the Animal Park.

You may notice that he looks a little different than the other giraffes at Fossil Rim. Giraffes from different parts of Africa have different patterns. Many think this means that there are many different species of giraffes, but later research has indicated that there is probably only one species just with different color patterns. Emba is considered a Rothschild's Giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi, while the other giraffe residents of Fossil Rim are considered Reticulated giraffes, Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata. For several years authorities didn't think Reticulated and Rothschild's should interbreed, but after studying them in the wild they have found that animals that looked like the Reticulated giraffes would genetically be more similar to Rothschild's and vice versa.

Sometime after the 30th of April, Emba should be able to come out of quarantine and then you will be able to view him wandering around the pasture below the Overlook. He is viewable during the day right now and is probably easier to find since he is still within the giraffe barn enclosure.
