What's New?

They even have their very own building to ensure that as many of the hatchlings as possible will live to have a chance at increasing the population in the wild. From the time they pip out of the egg until they reach between 50 to 70 grams in weight, they are protected behind glass with regular monitoring to assure all angles are covered in their rearing.

Adam, our Hoofstock Supervisor, reports that we have a bunch of babies on the ground. The Addax in the Species Survival Program herd have started calving. We now have 6 calves with more on the way. The Main Pasture addax herd should begin to calve within the next few weeks. The wildebeest are all very close to beginning their calving season in the front pasture and we already have one in the Game Preserve, near the giraffes. The sable herd in the Main Pasture has 8 tagged calves right now with at least one we didn't get our hands on yet. I know of at least one waterbuck calf out there too. The Scimitar Horned Oryx in the Front Pasture have a very pregnant female. And there are others we are keeping our eyes on as well.

Cassie, David, Kelley and Adam, part of our animal care team, are working on some management changes that will allow the herds to always calve at the best times of year, and to keep a bull in with them year round to keep the group dynamics as normal as possible.

Those of you who take the behind the scenes tours may now have a chance to glimpse the maned wolf pups. Pebbles is watching over them but they have now started wandering out and about on their own. Come out for a tour and see If you are one of the lucky ones to observe these adorable little ones.

We do still have a few animals that are going out to Little Rock Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park and The Wilds. We have a few new animals coming in from Oregon Wildlife Foundation, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and The Wilds. Keep your eyes open, there is always something different going on with the animals.

The Animal Care Spring semester interns are leaving and the Summer interns are coming in. We wish a safe journey to: Rachael Anderson (Children’s Animal Center) Tracy Moser (Animal Care) and Lindsey Kirkman (Rhino) who are departing and did a great job. We would like to welcome: Michael Robinson (A/C), Matt McGraw (Rhino), and Michael Kulisch (CAC). The two APC interns (Christina Taylor and Stacy Morrow) will be here until August.
