June 14th, Thursday: Wormshop!
Vermiculture Class + Tour

The multi-level morning class will be about vermiculture (composting with worms)! We will picnic for lunch, then take a guided tour of the rest of Fossil Rim!

June 18th, Monday: "Dirt Workshop"
Homeschool Class + Tour Event

How is soil made? Take a close-up, hands-on look at the organic and inorganic composition of "dirt." After the morning class, we'll share a picnic lunch, then take a tour of Fossil Rim.

July 9th, Monday: Go Ahead, Make My Day!
Homeschool Class + Tour Event

Investigate the process of enrichment for animals in captivity. A look at how Fossil Rim keeps its animals happy and entertained. Participants will make enrichment items for various animals. After the morning class, we will share a picnic lunch at the Overlook, then take a tour of Fossil Rim.

July 23rd, Monday: Animal Fashions Class + Tour

Investigate the different costumes animals wear on their bodies: from an insect’s exoskeleton to the feathers of a bird or a turtle’s shell. Share a picnic lunch after this morning class, then take a guided tour of Fossil Rim.

August 6th, Monday: Amazing Arthropods
(Insects, Spiders, and Scorpions, oh my!) Class + Tour

Learn about insects, spiders, and other arthropods, with a special focus on Texas natives. Picnic lunch at the Overlook at 12:00, followed by a guided tour of Fossil Rim.

August 20th, Monday: Colors by Nature
(Exploring Natural Dyes) Class +Tour

Cochineal is a scale insect found on prickly pear cactus that is used to produce a natural dye. It was used historically as a clothing dye, and is still used as a food dye today. We will talk about Cochineal and other natural dyes, and use Cochineal to dye bandanas during our morning class. After a picnic lunch, we’ll take a tour of Fossil Rim.
