Roan Antelope Joins the Herd

Our New Roan Antelope

After a bit of introduction, through the fence, to the other residents of the front pasture, the gate will be open and their new home will be with the other residents of this pasture.

We have also released a Nyala into the buffer pasture where you currently find emu, blackbuck, Greater Kudu and Bongo.

Magnum

The Nyala, along with the Kudu and Bongo, is another animal that has thin white stripes up and down along its side, presumed to help them hide in the forests (think of sunlight coming through tree trunks and you can imagine how their camouflage is effective). In addition, Nyalas have spots on their rumps.

Nyala

This little cutie was first placed into a holding pen in the buffer pasture where it could get used to the smells of the other animals (and where they could get used to her). Then on May 17th she was turned out into the pasture where she will make her home. Staff people were stationed at each cattle guard in that pasture to make sure she didn’t get scared and accidentally run into the grates.

However, she came out quite calmly and wandered around checking everything out. Be sure and keep an eye out for her on your next visit.
