Pup Update
The
carnivore keepers report that the pups have just recently begun to accompany
mom and dad to the fence during feeding time - instead of hiding
in the undergrowth - so lucky Behind-the-Scenes Tour guests may
be able to catch a glimpse of the little ones as well. They are
still quite a bit smaller than their parents, not to mention fuzzier
and darker-colored, but that will change rapidly over the next
few months as they approach adulthood.
In addition,
our Red Wolves Wilson and Havana, surprised us with a litter of
their own in the
first week of May. The prolific couple
gave birth to seven babies, which have not yet been sexed. The
vet staff recently got to check over the pups when they gave them
their
vaccinations, and have reported that all seven appear to be doing
just fine.
“Within
the past couple of days,” said Michael Robinson, the
carnivore intern, “they have started running out and hiding
under bushes during feeding time. They used to just huddle together
in a little bundle of heads and tails.”
He also
mentioned that they seem to be very curious about any tour guests they
encounter, and will actually peek out of their
shelter
to get a better look.
We congratulate
the dedicated parents, and animal care staff, whose hard work has
paid off with nine healthy
new pups this
spring.
Keep up the good work everybody! |
