Happy
Birthday Ralph & Venus!

Found
in countries such as Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad and surrounding countries, not much
is known about the wild populations of African Spurred Tortoises
due to few in-depth field studies. Any behavioral information about
the species comes from captive observations.
Popular
in the pet trade not many owners realize that the species is known for
it’s one track mind. They often break through fences and even brick walls
(weak ones of course) to reach their destination. There is proof of this at
the CAC. Just look for the patched holes at the bottom of the fences, there
are quite
a few! With such a slow digestive process Ralph and Venus are fed a diet of
vegetables, cactus and greens only 3 times a week (with fresh grass in between).
If you happen
to be lucky enough to visit on a feeding day you will notice that their meal
is served on a red tray. Stop by the CAC and find out why! Ralph is very photogenic
so be sure to bring your camera along Hope to see you soon and remember Ralph
and Venus are for looking and talking to only please!
P.S.
Don’t forget
Moxie's 9th birthday either. We wouldn’t want to
leave one of our African Pygmy Goats out of the celebration! |
