What is the difference between a Bontebok and a Blesbok? (answer at bottom)
Red Deer

Welcome,

I’m glad you are joining us in reading this issue. September is considered the start of fall, even though our Texas temperatures don’t always reflect this. September is still considered the start of school even though the students now go back in August. Out here September is known as the start of our Red Deer bugling. The males have shed the velvet from their antlers, staked out a territory, and are now announcing their presence to the females and warning the other males to stay away. If you are visiting, be sure to listen as their commanding sounds reverberate through the pastures.

I’ll be looking for you,

Jan Bussey

Animal of the Month: Welcome the Bontebok
New Species on Exhibit at Fossil Rim

Fossil Rim welcomes three Bontebok, Damaliscus pygargus. You will find them in the Game Preserve, the same pasture as the giraffes. These animals come from Southern Africa and are very similar to our Blesbok, Damaliscus dorcus phillipsi, found in the front pasture. continued

This note and picture came from one of our frequent visitors. Thank you, Roberta, for sharing.

This is a picture of two zebras standing next to each other and their stripes matched so well. It was so amazing to me when I took the picture. I go to Fossil Rim several times a year. The last time I went in December was for my birthday and my son and his girlfriend took me for a surprise. He knows I love it there and thought it would be a good day out for me. I have a folder on my computer with hundreds of pictures I have taken there over the past couple of years. Fossil Rim is one of my very favorite places to go and spend a day. Thanks for the wonderful place to go and enjoy a day.

What is the difference between a Bontebok and a Blesbok?

Q: What is the difference between a Bontebok and a Blesbok?

A: The primary differences are that the bontebok has a continuous ‘blaze’ while the blesbok’s has a slight interruption. The bontebok has a noticeable white patch on the rump while this is mostly absent in the blesbok.
