Hello from Fossil Rim Wildlife Center

September is here and we are all anticipating fall weather to follow. This is one of my favorite times of the year as we get to quit roasting and enjoy the cooler season. I believe the animals are relieved, too. They do tend to be a little friskier once fall arrives.

If you are tired of air-conditioning and want to get outdoors, come out to Fossil Rim and be our guest for a day, a day and night or the entire weekend.

Texas Wildflowers – Gayfeather Liatris mucronata
by Guest Contributor Anita Baker

One of the late summer or early autumn flowers that blooms at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is the slender pinkish-purple gayfeather. The plant sends up stalks, two to five feet tall, covered in tiny flowers that wave in the breeze often in the middle of tall native grasses on prairies and in meadows. Also known as prairie blazing star and button snakeroot, it draws butterflies, especially monarchs starting their southward migration.

The member of the aster family tolerates poor soils, drought, bright sun and summer heat. Flowers open first at the top of the spike and then bloom downward. It grows from a tuber with roots that can extend 15 feet into the soil.

The gayfeather is a common flower used in fresh and dried floral arrangements and can easily be grown in gardens.
