Turning leaves are turning heads

Greetings,

Fall has arrived and it is time to watch for the leaves to change. The beautiful fall leaf colors seem so much more vivid when viewed amid our bright green Ashe Junipers. Come witness this fantastic yearly phenomenon while observing our animals become more and more frisky as the weather cools down.

I’ll be looking for you,

Learning to Read & Write with Shadow
by Haily Summerford, Fossil Rim Volunteer

As the plane landed in Cape Town, South Africa, I was as excited as the first time back in 2001. I was eager to see my friends at Cheetah Outreach and the cheetah ambassadors, especially Shadow. As soon as I arrived and greeted my friends and Shadow, the volunteer work began.

The first week was filled with teacher workshops. The purpose of the workshops was to get feedback on a book about a cheetah family written by teachers in the Western Cape and ask teachers to plan some literacy lessons around chapters in the book. This was to help build the foundation of Cheetah Outreach’s next project, an elementary curriculum that links literacy and environmental education with a central component of the curriculum being a children’s book on a cheetah family.

Grantham Jansen, the teacher fellow you met in the last article, lead the workshops using new literacy concepts he learned while visiting the Smithsonian and Fort Worth.

The Nuts & Bolts of Fossil Rim

No organization could exist without a number of people who keep everything running. Here at Fossil Rim we call that our Support Services. In this area of Fossil Rim located behind the White Rhino facility we have a building that houses a wood shop, metal shop, paint shop, mechanic’s garage as well as offices and storage space. The great crew of six people who work here are responsible for the upkeep of all our physical property. They work on fences, buildings, plumbing, electric, construction, painting and anything else needing repair. Darryl Morris is the Director of Support Services and his crew consisting of Jerrad Turner, Drew Wilson, Steve Cummings, Roy Kinnard, and Mickey Rhodes make sure that your visit is as pleasant as possible.

How We Came to be Fossil Rim Wildlife Center - Tracing Our Progress from the 60's

Fossil Rim traces this property back into the ‘60’s when it was owned by a Dallas corporation and used as a hunting ranch. In 1973 Tom Mantzell, an oil man who had moved to Fort Worth from Austin, bought this property, stopped the hunting and re-named it Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch. He started to bring some of his friends down to show off his new-found bit of heaven. Some of these friends were on the Fort Worth Zoo board and suggested that he ought to share this with the public. That led to the paving of a 9 1/2 mile road meandering through the property that we still use today.
