Guest Interview on South African Holidays

Ymke Condy, wife of Pat Condy our Executive Director, shares some insight with us on how people in South Africa give thanks.

Q: Here in the U.S. we have an annual Thanksgiving Day holiday to give thanks. Our holiday is a time of family gathering and feasting. Do the people in South Africa have a certain day when they give thanks?

Giraffe Naming Contest

Big Cow, a 22-year-old reticulated giraffe at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, gave birth to a healthy baby male on September 22nd. He is an estimated 6 feet tall and 150 lbs.

Fossil Rim is holding a naming contest for the baby. Contestants may enter the contest by e-mailing name suggestions and contact information to lb@fossilrim.org

The last date of entry is November 30, 2005. The winner will be announced December 1.

Note: The birth of our new male giraffe was followed about a week and a half later by the birth of a female. The two babies are currently in the giraffe pen with their mothers making them much easier to see right now. Come out this winter and bring the camera.

David and Patty Oberbeck of Photoglyph Studios capture many images that Fossil Rim is thank-full for. Talented photographers, David and Patty first explored Texas as a relaxing getaway location; their trips evolved into opportunities to photograph the intricacies of nature found in Fossil Rim.  Their kindness and generosity in contributing their work has afforded Fossil Rim with amazing photographs, free of charge.

New Baby Black Rhino Now Calling Fossil Rim Home

One of Fossil Rim’s Black Rhinos, Coco had her calf Wednesday, October 19th between 5:00 pm and midnight. Based on how the calf looked at midnight he was most likely born between 6:00 and 8:00 pm.

He appears healthy and Coco is doing her usual excellent job of mothering. We got our hands on him Friday October 21st for his neonate exam. His weight at that time was 106 pounds. He is now probably around 200 pounds and doing quite well.

This is Coco's fourth calf, Kusamona's (the dad’s) first calf and the fifth black rhino calf born at Fossil Rim. He is also the first male born here which means we will most likely have him here for a long time.

The calf has been named in Zulu (a South African language) Inkosana, which means “eldest (first-born) son”.

2005 Wine Safari - In Case You Missed It

Our major fundraiser of the year is called Wine Safari on the Rim. This year on October 15th we had our largest attendance ever for this event. People came to sample tasty fare from 7 different chefs, enter bids at the silent auction tables and get involved with our big board and major auctions going on throughout the evening.

A huge tent was set up at the Foothills Safari Camp and guests were shuttled from the front gate parking area back to the staging area. Everyone had a fabulous time eating, bidding and enjoying the entertainment. Come join us next year so you won’t have to miss out on the fun.
