May
is International Rhino Month
Please
join us in this celebration by reading about our outstanding
vet Robin Radcliffe and his great
work internationally with rhinos. You will learn how we fit
in to the
grander scheme of things in helping to save these marvelous
animals,
then come visit with the rhinos on our drive-through. You will
find
the white rhinos have been moved off the main yard. We
are doing some
work in their yard and will be seeding it and then letting
it rest
for a while before re-introducing the rhinos. You
will be able to see
one of our rhinos in the "teaser pen" just before
the main rhino yard
and there are two currently housed in the area accessable
by walking
around the pond near the front gate and continuing to the
deck. While
observing the white rhinos from the deck you are likely to
hear
Attwater Prairie Chickens "booming" (calling
to mates). They are
housed to the left of the deck and make such a great sound.
I'll
be looking for you,

Endangered
Species Day - May 11, 2006
Recently,
the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating
May 11, 2006 as "Endangered Species Day. AZA fully
supported this measure. Endangered Species Day hopes
to raise awareness about the threats to endangered species
and the success stories in species recovery. With over
1,800 species worldwide now listed as threatened and
endangered, and thousands more threatened with extinction
unless they are protected, public education efforts are
greatly needed. continued
