Hey
Baby!
With
the approach of spring we are starting to see births of babies
at Fossil Rim. It will only continue to get better!
Just look at this adorable spotted Axis deer baby as well
as the Sable antelope pair of young. Soon blackbuck babies
will be in abundance, I can’t believe those tiny
little legs actually work but they are capable of running
after
mother within about 20 minutes after birth. Always keep
an eye out for Aoudad babies, mothers often have twins
and they
are soooo cute! Expect to see them climbing up out of
the steep ravines. We are also hoping to see baby Scimitar
horned Oryx soon, a species we haven’t bred here
for the last 6 years.

Local
Scene
With
March here already we know the wildflowers are not far
behind. When visiting fossil Rim you get to see not only
our wonderful animals but also catch a great look at
some beautiful Texas wildflowers. Our state flower, the
bluebonnet, usually shows up first followed closely by
the Indian Paintbrush. Come see how many species you
can locate.

| Call
of Duty
If
you are coming out to Fossil Rim during March be sure and
stop by our nature store to see this fantastic sculpture “call
of duty” by artist Stephen Herr, dedicated to the firefighters
of 9/11. It will be auctioned off on March 31st. You may
purchase tickets at $5 each to become the privileged owner.
Proceeds will benefit Fossil Rim’s Safety Department
and be used to purchase safety equipment and supplies that
benefit our staff and guests.

| Zebras
and Snowflakes
by
David Thompson
Just
as no two snowflakes are shaped exactly alike, no two zebras
have the same pattern of stripes. Prior to the days of
imbedding transponder chips just beneath the skin of animals
in order to unerringly identify individuals, zebra studbook
cards carried attached photos of the individual’s
face and left hip. The photos were as accurate as fingerprints
in assuring that the animal in question was the one recorded,
and illustrated, on the studbook card.

| Odyssey
of the Mist
Come
experience a new opportunity at Fossil Rim. From
your first glimpse of the intimate safari camp at Fossil
Rim,
you will realize that an adventure and awakening (experienced
by a select few) is about to begin.
You
will be transported through the beautiful landscape,
over hills and savannahs
where a thousand amazing,
rare and endangered animals roam protected and free.
The opportunity to experience such a close encounter with these creatures
outside of Fossil Rim would require a trip across three
continents. continued |
