Greetings,

School is out, it is time to plan vacations, come to Fossil Rim, and enjoy your summer. If you don’t have a membership, now is the time to get one. Members have the chance to come for free and delight in these magnificent animals every day of the summer (as well as the rest of the year). On the warmer days you can keep the air conditioning on and have a fantastic time without having to endure the heat.

I’ll be looking for you,

Jan Bussey

Fossil Rim Guided Tours

Fossil Rim Guided Tours

The best way to see Fossil Rim is to take a tour. This will save wear on your vehicle, cut down your gas consumption and give you a chance to learn information from your guide. Parents can use the time to enjoy their children’s reactions to the giraffe stretching its 18 inch long tongue out to retrieve food or the child’s first reaction to the many animals they will encounter. continued

What's New?

What's New?

Chicks, chicks, and more chicks; Attwater’s Prairie Chickens that is. So far we have had 143 of these little darlings hatch this year. This is our most endangered bird in Texas and Fossil Rim is doing everything possible to prevent its extinction. Join us on a behind-the-scenes tour to see first hand the tremendous amount of work that goes into rearing these rare chicks. Continued

Animal of the Month – Aoudad / Barbary Sheep

Aoudad are the only wild sheep found in Africa. Their populations are declining due to hunting. They were brought to the U.S. in the early 1900’s for exhibition in zoos and parks. Since their breeding was so successful the excess sheep were used to establish the free-ranging populations that currently exist in California, New Mexico and Texas. Continued

Q: What is the best time to visit Fossil Rim?

A: Early in the day or later in the afternoon is your best time to visit. We let the last car in the front gate at 5:30 and lock the gates at 7:30 during the summer months. Allow yourself plenty of time to appreciate your experience with us. There is so much to see we don’t want you to cheat yourself. It is hard to imagine getting a chance to see most of our animals in less than two to three hours. Most people who want to feed and take their time to really observe the animals will take even longer. (However, if you are really in a hurry, you can do the drive in a little less than two hours.)
