Summer is Here

Summer is here. School is out. What do you do with your children for the summer? We hope that a large part of your time spent with your children involves time spent in nature. We, of course, offer that opportunity to you with the additional pleasure of enjoying marvelous scenery while you are driving safely among several species of endangered animals. Be sure and read the article on keeping safe while visiting the center in your vehicle. At any rate, have a marvelous summer.

I’ll be looking for you,

Jan Bussey

Animal of the Month: Sandhill Crane

Animal of the Month: Sandhill Crane
Grus Canadensis

In driving through Fossil Rim you may have seen some very large gray birds and wondered about them. They are sandhill cranes and they live permanently at Fossil Rim. They were hatched in captivity and brought here when they were quite young. Originally there were 6 or 8 birds living in our small pasture where you now can see the Greater Kudu. As these birds matured they started to choose territories and the pair you see today was the successful defender of Fossil Rim as their chosen area. continued

Happy Birthday Ralph & Venus!

Happy Birthday Ralph & Venus!
by Ashley Wisniewski, Children’s Animal Center Supervisor

During the month of July stop by Fossil Rim’s Children’s Animal Center to wish our African Spurred Tortoises Ralph and Venus a Happy Birthday! Ralph, weighing in at over 100lbs, will be turning the ripe old age of 20 while Venus, only 70lbs, will be going on 15. Both residents of Fossil Rim for the majority of their lives the two love birds (or should I say love tortoises) can frequently be found roaming in and out of the CAC pens hunting for a fresh patch of grass to munch on or a shady spot to dig a burrow. Conservation Centers for Species Survival “CCSS”
What Is It, And How Fossil Rim Wildlife Center Is Involved
By Kelley Snodgrass, Director of Animal Care

As you know, Fossil Rim Widlife Center is involved with many conservation programs on and off site, and we are constantly on the lookout for new ways to accomplish our conservation mission. One relatively new program was explored and established a few years ago that links five geographically different zoological organizations across North America as a consortium named the Conservation Centers for Species Survival (CCSS). continued

Dr. Haefele Completes First Year as Head Veterinarian

Holly Haefele has just completed her first year as Director of Animal Health at Fossil Rim. Holly first came to Fossil Rim in 1999 as a vet preceptor, a student gaining experience while in her last semesters of Veterinary School, and worked under the then-Head-Vet, Robin Radcliffe. She kept in touch with Dr. Radcliffe and other friends here at FR while working at a small animal practice in Massachusetts, and in April of 2004, returned to work under Dr. Radcliffe as the Associate Veterinarian. Get Up Close and Personal with Fossil Rim Residents During Member Appreciation Events

Our Giraffe Encounter Member Appreciation Event on Saturday, June 23rd, was a fun afternoon! The response to the reserved seating invitation was overwhelming - the event was completely booked within a few hours and had a waiting list! Continued

Q: May I get out of the car just long enough to take a picture?

A: No. We ask that you remain in your car for your own safety. Many of the animals consider the vehicles going through the park as “feed wagons.” However, once we exit those vehicles, we then become a predator in their eyes. When animals are threatened there are three possible responses - freeze, flee, or fight. None of us wants to experiment with which response they may have at that time. Please help us keep you safe – stay in your vehicle at all times. You may take pictures out the window of your vehicle.
