Evidence
of Romance at Fossil Rim
Baby
Cheetahs
As evidence that romance has been in the air
for a while down here, we have lots of baby cheetahs.
Seven
in fact.
You might be lucky enough to see them running and playing
with their mothers and each other, or making their first
attempts at climbing. It is a rare sight indeed to have
this many visible so close together. Don’t miss
out.
Special
Note: Fossil Rim can now claim 107 births
at Fossil Rim since our first litters were born in
1986. Our cheetahs go to other AZA accredited institutions
to breed and become education resources for years to
come.

Baby
Giraffes
You might also be one of the first to have a chance to feed our baby giraffes
born last September. They have both been out with the adults and are getting
brave enough to come up to the cars on occasion. What cuties they are! Noa is
the larger of the two and is quite above the growth chart. Jerz, the little girl,
is quite below the growth chart and is undoubtedly the smallest giraffe we have
ever seen. |
Did
You Know?
During the first week of its life the baby giraffe
can grow
more than one inch a day. By the time it is one year
old it
will
be around 10 feet tall. Full size is attained by 5 years
for females and 7 years for males. Adult females are
around 15 feet and males 18 feet on average. The average
adult weight for a giraffe is 1700 pounds. |

Introducing
Inkosana our newest baby rhino
This photo was taken by C.C. from the Fort Worth Zoo Education
Department. Isn’t he adorable?
While
Inkosana isn’t
on the drive through, he may sometimes be seen on a behind-the-scenes
tour. We did get to see him out
with mom last week just running,
skidding in the dirt and having a great time.
Rhinos
are extremely endangered and we are so thrilled to have
this little guy with us. We’re very fortunate to
be experiencing great success with our rhino breeding programs
with the white and black rhinos. Stay tuned for a future
issue where we will bring you an update on world-wide rhino
conservation efforts from Dr. Robin Radcliffe, who was
in Sumatra last fall conducting rhino research.

Ever
Heard of a P. Horse?
Just
before you drive by our vet clinic you might see an animal you
have not noticed out here before. This is a male Przewalski’s
aka P. horse, who came to us from the San Diego Wildlife Park. The
Przewalski’s is the last true wild horse in the world.

Local
Scene
With
1200 Animals to Care for Grass Fires are a HUGE concern.
With
all the wildfires that have been occurring lately we have
had several questions of “what happens to the animals
in case of fire?”
It can
be quite a problem with around 1200 animals in our care.
Luckily at Fossil Rim we have 5 pastures. We have fire
breaks cleared to prevent the spread of wildfires and we
have a pump truck on site so that we can get a good start
on putting out a fire even before the local fire department
can get here.

Would
you like to make a donation but just don’t
know what?
How
about gift cards that we can use at places like
Lowe’s, Home
Depot, Target or Wal Mart. We are always
in need of repair items or smaller things to
use
for the animals comfort and enrichment. Any
amount would be most welcome.
Mail
the cards to:
