Hiking Trail Reopened
continued from main page
The trail traverses
a wooded hillside and you will find refreshing shade in the summer
months. There are two benches set up along the way to rest or enjoy
the view. Occasionally you will catch sight of some of the wondrous
animals of Fossil Rim grazing on the opposing hillside. The trail
is steep and rocky in places and should be used by those who have
steady legs. Don’t rush, take time to listen for birds and
enjoy the many plants along the way. Just be sure you can recognize
poison ivy before starting out.
On the upside
of the same hill and behind the Children’s Animal
Center you will find another short hiking trail that winds around
the top of that hill. You are much more exposed on this trail but
it is the early stage of a birding trail. There have been Golden
Cheeked Warblers identified by their calls in this area. Many other
birds frequent this spot to look for food and nest spots. Find a
place to sit quietly (not on the cactus, of course) while you look
and listen for our feathered friends. Sometimes you will even find
them looking back at you. |
