Welcome
to Our African Guests
continued from main newsletter
Dr. Pete Morkel
is from Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, where he works for the Frankfurt
Zoological Society. He had always wanted to work with wildlife,
though not necessarily as a vet. However, his path did take him
into vet school and he landed a job working with wildlife in Namibia
after his graduation. This job ended up requiring a lot of work
with the rhinos and Pete has stayed with it ever since. His work
has led to his traveling to many other countries with game capture
and surplus animal capture to sell for restocking other preserves
or private ranches in Africa.
Our other distinguished
guest was Richard Fryer, head of rhino capture from Namibia. His
conservation
seed was planted early on by his father
who also worked with the game capture unit in what was S. W. Africa
prior to Independence, now Namibia. Pete Morkel was with the Namibia
Ministry of Environment for 14 years. Richard now runs the Black
rhino Custodianship Program. There are approximately 1,150 black
rhinos in Namibia. Richard and his group work directly with about
185 of them, that now live on private ranches. Pete was part of
the beginning of this program that was started in 1993 by people
interested
in the conservation of the rhinos. Richard joined them in 1996 |
