Fossil Rim's 25th Anniversary Celebration
June 20, 2009
1984: The beginning of Reagan’s 2nd reign, the debut of Apple computer’s Macintosh, MTV Music Awards and the Cosby show. The Bell System splits, Michael Jackson’s hair catches fire, and Vanessa Williams scandalously loses the Miss crown. Willie Nelson wins favorite country male artist at the American Music Awards. In science, the first human embryo transfer results in a live birth and Cesar Chavez leads a boycott on pesticides. And, on the international conservation scene, good ole boy Tom Mantzel opens Fossil Rim Wildlife Center’s scenic drive to the public- forever changing the voice of conservation in Texas.
25 years later, ~ 200,000 people visit Fossil Rim Wildlife Center each year to experience endangered and exotic animals in an idyllic setting. Our visitors may not realize that behind the pastoral beauty is an intense race against time. Fossil Rim plays an important role in global efforts to save endangered species; its success in breeding certain animals and re-introduction of some species to their native range is phenomenal. Fossil Rim's research in species propagation is advancing the science of wildlife conservation dramatically. The staff of Fossil Rim is breaking new ground and, in the process, fine-tuning a model of what wildlife preserves will look like in the future. We are an independent, self-financed non-profit corporation that unlike other zoos and wildlife parks of our caliber receives no government funding. We cordially invite you to help us celebrate our Silver Anniversary and 25 years of being a part of the local community on June 20th
