Lama guanicoe

Area of origin: Southern Peru to eastern Argentina and Tiera del Fuego

Guanaco are excellent swimmers and can run up to 30 mph.

Guanaco blood has more red blood cells than most mammals. This allows them to carry more oxygen so they can function in high altitudes.

Guardian
We brought the guanaco here in 2001 because of their reputation for protecting livestock from predators. We have an occasional problem with coyote and are hoping the guanaco will keep them away, especially from the smaller antelope. It's still too soon to tell if this plan will work because the guanaco need some time to become accustomed to a territory in order to protect it.

How they live
Guanaco prefer dry open country either on the plains or in the mountains. Thye are mainly grazers but will also browse. Guanaco ususally form small family groups of about 15 individuals. The group consists of females, their young, and one male.
