The adopted deer
Fallow deer may be white, spotted, light or chocolate brown. They
have a prominent Adam's apple which distinguishes them from the
axis deer when antlers are absent. Our herd includes 50 males and
200 females. There are seven females in the front pasture that are hand-raised. These fallow deer are not shy about approaching vehicles on the Scenic Drive.
How they live
You'll find fallow deer everywhere, sleeping during the heat of the day, or browsing on leaves and grazing in the front pasture. They are gregarious, social animals. Although they tend to stay together in a herd, the deer do mingle with other species. Sometimes they are too people-friendly, and come looking for a handout. When threatened, the frightened fallows flee into the woods, using their varied coat colors effectively as camouflage.
