Our Herd
Fossil Rim is home to a herd of 5 male and 12 female Axis Deer and is actively breeding.

The Axis deer are commonly mistaken for fallow deer. The distinctive black markings on the face and the black stripe along their back sets them apart. In addition, the male Axis deer have branched antlers, unlike the palmate antlers of the fallow deer.

How They Behave
You'll see Axis deer hanging out along the treeline on the drive to the main pasture, sleeping when it's hot. They tend to isolate themselves as a herd, but they do mingle with Fallow deer, white-tailed deer, and waterbuck.
